Can You Give A Dog A Home?

Live Dog Shelter is getting ready to move to a new location, right on the other side of Chisinau – hopefully within the next month. Unfortunately it will not be easy and with over 250 dogs to transport it will take several days to get everything to the new site. With that in mind I would like to share with you some pictures of just a handful of some the amazing dogs that we have at the shelter and see if there is anyone who can possibly adopt one of them and offer it a loving home. If you can’t offer a dog a home, then you can also take part in our virtual adoption scheme.

Ben

This is Ben. If you read us regularly you may already be familiar with him. He is a very friendly and charming male and he loves to be petted and play with a ball (virtually adopted)

Bim

This boy is Bim. He is has been at the Live shelter for around 5 months. He is a very quiet and patient dog and is well behaved. Bim was sad when his last owners had to leave him with us at the dog shelter and would love to find a new home.

Chunga

This little lad is Chunga. He is a small and nervous little boy, but really likes being petted and cuddled. His teeth are always showing because of how his jaw is, so it seems that he is grinning all the time.

DSC_0005 (2)

This girl is one of our longer term residents. Though I don’t know her name – I’m sure that she does have one – she is one of my favourite dogs at LIVE dog shelter. She is very social and really loves to be held and stroked – giving little moans of pleasure. She looks a lot like the Jack Russell breed of dog.

Lady 2

What other name but Lady for a dog that sits like this? Lady is very sweet natured, both to other dogs and to people and she likes human company.

Flower 8

This young girl is called Flower. She is about 7 months old and is another one of my favourite dogs at LIVE dog shelter. She likes to follow me everywhere until I give her attention and take her in my arms. She really is a beautiful and sweet girl.

Smiley

Probably you already know Smiley. She had an accident in the summer and had to have one of her forelegs amputated. But she is still as lovely a girl as ever and is one of the unforgettable characters at the dog shelter. Now days she likes to hang around on the roof of one of our buildings and watch over the dog shelter. She is very fond of cuddles.

Teffy

Teffy is another dog that you will probably know if you read about our dog shelter regularly. She is a beautiful girl, but unfortunately has problems with movements due to injuries sustained to her spine and spinal cord. Teffy really needs a home where she can receive special attention.

Tilly 2

This is another dog who has been at the shelter for a long time but whose name I do not know. I have called her Tilly ever since I knew her. Tilly is a very sweet girl, just over a year old and loves to sit in people’s laps and be stroked.

If you can offer a caring home to any of these dogs, or are interested in sponsoring a dog for ‘virtual adoption’ then please contact us by email to straydogsmd@gmail.com or phone Anna on 37368620787 or Natasha on 37379989969. Thanks!

Protest today against animal cruelty in Chisinau

Today (March 23rd) from 10am to around 3pm we held a demonstration outside Chisinau town hall voicing our anger at the way that the government attempts to handle the stray animals of Moldova. We requested to speak with the mayor of the town, Dorin Chirtoaca, so that we could ask him directly to consider a more ethical and more humane method of solving the problem together.

It was a sunny day in Chisinau, although it wasn’t so warm, so it was nice to see that around 35 people had gathered to support the cause. Among them were members of ALGA and AREAL – organisations that campaign for animal rights in Moldova – and several volunteers who work with alongside them – as well as representatives from a few other organisations. Armed with drums, whistles, banners and a megaphone we voiced our disapproval of the current method of disposing of stray animals – namely, kidnapping them from the streets and murdering them.

Protesters....

Eventually, after sending many of his cronies to try and appease us, Chirtoaca made an appearance himself, sometime after lunch to give us a few minutes of his time. However, he already had his mind set and was not so interested in listening to what we had to say. He told us that he was not interested in giving money for sterilizing stray dogs. It seems that he would rather see them killed.

Mayor

But we will not let this stop us. The fight continues…

Photos from Petrocani dog shelter, Chisinau

Even though today it is snowing in Chisinau, the last few days have been quite sunny and it is starting to feel like summer here again. As well as the LIVE dog shelter, I regularly work at another dog shelter just outside of Chisinau on Strada Petrocani. While the sun was shining I felt like taking some pictures of some of the shelter’s residents….

Donation appeal: Risking eviction late last year, “Live” shelter is finally ready to move on new land

This is the heartbreaking story of Teffy, a beautiful sweet natured dog who has been left with a permanent disability following repeated brutal and violent beatings carried out at Necropolis, the notorious public dog ‘death shelter’ in Moldova. These beatings have affected her spinal cord which in turn have affected her motor skills and she can no longer walk in a straight line. Teffy was rescued by staff from the Areal Moldavian Dog Rescue Shelter and she now lives in safety at the sanctuary of this Shelter and despite her disabilities, she is a happy and loving dog. Everyone who meets her adores her, she is a true survivor of Necropolis.

The Areal Dog Rescue Shelter was set up in June 2014 by a wonderful woman called Natalia Nasa. This remarkable lady and her small team of dedicated staff work endless hours, often donating their own money in order to help rescue the stray, abused and abandoned dogs, many of whom are traumatised and provide them with a safe place to live where they will be loved, fed, vaccinated, neutered and looked after. Some will find loving homes, other dogs like Teffy may not and their forever ‘home’ will be the Shelter.

I founded Friends of Moldavian Strays (FOMS) in the UK following a donation I sent in July 2014 and as I learnt more about the work of the Shelter, the staff who run it and the appalling and cruel treatment of the stray and abandoned dogs in Moldova, I was determined to help them and this has now become a huge part of my life to raise funds to support the continuing good work of the Shelter. Friends of Moldavian Strays is a small committed team run by three ladies in the UK and one in Canada. This Shelter is run purely on donations.

I am writing this appeal for help because the Shelter has a crisis situation and with the best will in the world we cannot raise funds quickly enough to help. The Shelter has recently been forced to find a new plot of land to relocate to due to a high increase in the rent on the current plot, which we cannot possibly continue to pay as well as covering costs for veterinary treatments, neutering and sterilisation, food, fuel, etc. A very large plot has been found for 100 Euros a month and is available for a long-term rental period of 10 years and through previous fundraising efforts, we have paid for three years rental in advance. However there is an enormous amount of work needed here before the dogs can be relocated. The main work includes fencing, gates, the connection of water and electricity, building dog aviaries, dog kennels, renovation of a small building to use as an office/shelter for staff as well as the need to pay for the transportation costs for 250 the dogs.

Without this Shelter dogs like Teffy would have died a terrible death in the public shelter, now she and others like her can live in safety. Time is of the essence here, so can you please help us by making a donation in order that we can get this urgent work completed for our new Shelter.
